Primitive Influence_ Research

Initially, my project was about industrialism and my inspiration was from the metropolitan cathedral in Liverpool. However, during my research on multi-faith centres, I found myself more interested in the theme of primitivism instead. This then became the main theme of my project, and one of the architectural influences that inspired me was the clochans found in Ireland, because of their history and shape.

Clochans are located in County Kerry, Ireland and they are ancient beehive huts dating from the 8th to 12th centuries (Jones, 2022). They were built in early Christian or prehistoric Irish architectural styles and served various purposes such as residences, storage areas, places of worship and they offer insights into the austere lifestyle of monks (Aalen, 1964).They have an historical and cultural significance because they represent the early Christian communities. Researching on them is important for my multi-faith centre project because the centre aims to include diverse cultural heritage.

The beehive shape of Clochans has both practical and symbolic aspects. "In practical terms, it offers structural stability, weather resistance, and wind resistance" (HoneyBee & Co, 2022). They also symbolise unity, spirituality, and a connection to nature because they are made of stones which makes them durable. The Clochans huts have functional benefits for weather protection and structural stability which something I should research more about due to Zambia's climate.

Eunine Fay Jones - Research

E. Fay Jones was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, USA on January 31, 1921. He spent his childhood in the rural Ozark Mountains, where he gained love for nature and the environment, which had an impact on his architectural designs later in life. After completing his studies at Rice University, he joined Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural practice, Taliesin Associated Architects, as an apprentice. He worked closely with Wright on several projects, including the renowned Taliesin West in Arizona (Compton, 2023). Fay Jones E. Fay Jones is famous for his natural architectural style, which includes integrating buildings with the environment, using materials like stone and wood, and incorporating geometric shapes inspired by nature. "Jones ignored architectural trends and instead focused on his own organic aesthetic with materials found in The Ozarks and familiar traditional forms from his home region"(mariathuroczy, 2013) .  One of his design that has inspired me for this project...

Multi-faith centres and religious spaces

Multi-faith  centres are inclusive spaces that encourage dialogue, understanding, and collaboration among people from various religious backgrounds. They   provides a space where people of differing religious beliefs can spend time in contemplation or prayer  (Center for Architecture, 2023) .  These spaces promote diversity and unity through shared values and interfaith harmony. They provide a neutral setting for worship, dialogue, and community-building, contributing to inclusivity. The significance of these centres in promoting inclusivity and diversity lies in their celebration of diverse religious traditions and encouragement of interaction among different faiths. They also foster open dialogue to break down cultural and religious barriers through shared spaces and activities, as well as promote the idea that diversity is an asset by providing a space where all faiths are respected  (KAICIID, 2020).  Understanding diverse cultural and rel...

Final major project: Digital software

For my project I will use SketchUp to help me achieve my final design. SketchUp is an easy 3D modelling programme . SketchUP landscape design SketchUp is a really handy software for landscape architects and designers who want to create playground designs. It has many useful features and advantages that are specifically designed to meet their requirements. Here are some reasons why SketchUp is a great option for for this task: 1. User friendly interface  The interface of SketchUp is well-known for being easy to use and understand. Beginners and professionals alike can easily navigate the workspace and utilise the simple tools. Even if you are new to it, you can quickly grasp the basics and start creating 3D models without any difficulties. 2. 3D modelling capabilities SketchUp is great at creating detailed 3D models. It helps designers visualise playground layouts, equipment, and landscaping elements in a realistic three-dimensional space. The software has precise modelling to...
