Ideas generation

For the first week of art portfolio, we got our respective brief for our final project of the term. My project is based on a tourist information and visitors centre which needs to serve 5000 people. The centre should include a gift shop, cloakrooms, staff room, parking for both staff and public, reception/office, janitor office, toilets and everything should be wheelchair accessible.

to expand our ideas on our diferent brief we were asked to make a mind map and to be creative about it. "A mind map is a diagram in which information is represented visually, usually with a central idea placed in the middle and associated ideas arranged around it"( oxford dictionary).

When I began creating my mind map, I was unsure of where to start. All I knew was that I needed a large structure to accommodate 5000 people and that I wanted to incorporate natural elements due to the proximity of the centre to the forest and the sea. And since the city of New Cromwell has gone through a devastating fire, incorporating nature is a good way to promote healing and renewal in the community.

In order to create my mind map, I decided to make a tower because I need a spacious structure to accommodate 5000 people, as mentioned earlier. From there, I began linking new ideas that branched out from the main theme and related to the project. Given that the building is situated next to a nice view of the city and the tramway, I thought about what visitors would see through the windows and what size and shape they should be. Then there is the concept of "greenergy," which simply means green energy. I want to promote sustainability in the development of this centre and minimise pollution as much as possible. I want to emphasise nature and sustainability, so I am considering adding plants around the building to create a more welcoming environment. It would be great to include some new flowers and trees specific to New Cromwell, so visitors can get a feel of the city right from the centre. As for the building itself, I have not decided on the shape yet. Since it needs to be wheelchair accessible, a ground-level design with no stairs would be more practical. However, since New Cromwell is a small city, building a tower could save space. Also, considering the complex's proximity to the water, I need to think about how to incorporate or link it to the centre's design.

  1. Some really good ideas here and plenty to explore - looking forward to seeing what you do with these ideas and allowing yourself to explore plenty of different ideas before you settle on your final design. The idea of introducing trees/flowers that are native to the area and focusing on renewal could be a strong direction to take this in.

Multi-faith centres and religious spaces

Multi-faith  centres are inclusive spaces that encourage dialogue, understanding, and collaboration among people from various religious backgrounds. They   provides a space where people of differing religious beliefs can spend time in contemplation or prayer  (Center for Architecture, 2023) .  These spaces promote diversity and unity through shared values and interfaith harmony. They provide a neutral setting for worship, dialogue, and community-building, contributing to inclusivity. The significance of these centres in promoting inclusivity and diversity lies in their celebration of diverse religious traditions and encouragement of interaction among different faiths. They also foster open dialogue to break down cultural and religious barriers through shared spaces and activities, as well as promote the idea that diversity is an asset by providing a space where all faiths are respected  (KAICIID, 2020).  Understanding diverse cultural and rel...

Final major project: Digital software

For my project I will use SketchUp to help me achieve my final design. SketchUp is an easy 3D modelling programme . SketchUP landscape design SketchUp is a really handy software for landscape architects and designers who want to create playground designs. It has many useful features and advantages that are specifically designed to meet their requirements. Here are some reasons why SketchUp is a great option for for this task: 1. User friendly interface  The interface of SketchUp is well-known for being easy to use and understand. Beginners and professionals alike can easily navigate the workspace and utilise the simple tools. Even if you are new to it, you can quickly grasp the basics and start creating 3D models without any difficulties. 2. 3D modelling capabilities SketchUp is great at creating detailed 3D models. It helps designers visualise playground layouts, equipment, and landscaping elements in a realistic three-dimensional space. The software has precise modelling to...

Research - Final major project: Style of Architecture

For me Playground architecture is about designing and planning outdoor spaces, I am interested in design that are functional, and give purpose to community. For this project I am inspired by three Architects, Kunal Maniar, Carl Theodor Sorensen and Aldo Van Eyck. Kunal Maniar Carl Theodor Sorensen Aldo Van Eyck Kunal Maniar is one of the most famous landscape architects in India. He worked on many projects and always cares about nature but most importantly about water conservation. As my project focuses on the ecosystem and sustainability, Kunal Maniar is a great inspiration with his work and techniques. "Landscape architecture and mindful planning interventions applied at a large scale can help restore ecological balance in regions that have suffered ill-effects of exploitation by humans and build resilience against anthropogenic climate change" (Kunal Maniar, 2023). Architects such as, Carl Theodor Sorensen and designers who work on playground architecture focus on creating...
