St Moritz by John Pawson

The St. Moritz Chapel is a chapel which has been renovated by John Pawson. It is located   in Augsburg, Germany.  St.Moritz  John Pawson is known for his minimalist design approach which is incorporated in his style into the St. Moritz Chapel by having white walls to give a simplistic effect and a sense of purity. The interior is filled with natural light through large glass panels which helps to create   a connection with the environment. " The treatment of the apse windows represents the culmination of a wider strategy for light, whose aim is to achieve a clear distribution of light, with the apse as the brightest area in the church"  (Etherington 2013). The visual of the white walls is complemented by a warm wood that creates contrast.    St.Moritz John Pawson's approach to the design of the St. Moritz Chapel is centred around minimalism and essential elements, with added symbolic features to emphasise its purpose as a place for worship and c...

Primitive Influence_ Research

Initially, my project was about industrialism and my inspiration was from the metropolitan cathedral in Liverpool. However, during my research on multi-faith centres, I found myself more interested in the theme of primitivism instead. This then became the main theme of my project, and one of the architectural influences that inspired me was the clochans found in Ireland, because of their history and shape. Clochans are located in County Kerry, Ireland and they are ancient beehive huts dating from the 8th to 12th centuries (Jones, 2022). They were built in early Christian or prehistoric Irish architectural styles and served various purposes such as residences, storage areas, places of worship and they offer insights into the austere lifestyle of monks (Aalen, 1964).They have an historical and cultural significance because they represent the early Christian communities. Researching on them is important for my multi-faith centre project because the centre aims to include diverse cultural ...

Multi faith centres

Multi-faith centres are welcoming environments that promote conversation and cooperation among individuals of various religious beliefs. They offer a neutral environment for worship, discussion, and community development which encourages diversity and togetherness through shared beliefs and interfaith unity (KAICIID, 2020). Researching about these is important to understand the main purpose and different features on multi-faith centre in general Multi-faith Centre in Abu Dhabi The Tolerance Centre is a multi-faith centre situated in Abu Dhabi, United Arabs Emirates. "The Abrahamic Family House offers a concrete, marble and oak manifestation of the UAE’s publicised push toward tolerance" (Gambrell, 2023). It is made of a modern and welcoming design that includes elements from different religions to emphasise the main purpose of a multi-faith centre which is unity. "The contemporary design was chosen after a rigorous process that included architects of diverse backgrounds...

Demographics

Kitwe is a city located in the northern region of Zambia, which is situated in south-central Africa. It is the main centre for industrial and commercial activities within the copper-belt region. Kitwe's population "Kitwe's 2024 population is now estimated at 792,350. In 1950, the population of Kitwe was 45,887. Kitwe has grown by 29,369 in the last year, which represents a 3.85% annual change" (worldpopulationreview.com, 2024). Population by age The chart shows that there is a large number of young people in Kitwe, which means that the community is likely to grow and that there will be a need for schools and places for leisure activities which the centre could provide.  Zambia has diverse ethnicities which includes the Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, Lozi, and others. Which are also found in Kitwe. "The officials languages of Zambia are: Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, Lozi, Lunda, Luvale, Kaonde, English" (Zambia, 2023) The main religion in ...

Materials and sustainability

FERROCK Ferrock is a sustainable building material that replaces cement and is made mostly from recycled waste materials. It is created from waste steel dust (which would normally be waste) and silica from ground-up glass, which when poured and upon reaction with carbon dioxide creates iron carbonate that binds carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the Ferrock (Sefolo, 2021) Ferrock is a good material for building a multi-faith centre in Zambia for several reasons which are firstly, its sustainable composition, as stated above it is made from recycled materials like steel dust and glass. This reduces waste and lessens carbon’s use. Secondly, Ferrock is a strong and durable material which makes it suitable for Zambia's climate which has high temperature and is prone to earthquakes. using ferrock will ensure a long life for the multifaith centre. Furthermore, Ferrock has thermal properties which will help maintain indoor temperatures, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooli...

Materials and sustainability research

OAK WOOD   Oak wood is a type of hard wood known because it is hard, durable, heavy and dense with very close grain and due to their high tannin content, they are very resistant to insect and fungal infestations. "It is often used for furniture joinery, flooring, panelling, decking and veneers" ( libéron n.d). I have decided to use oak wood in the construction of the multi-faith centre because it has several advantages such as Its durability which will ensures that the multi-faith centre stand for a long time in Zambia's tropical climate and it will help reduce maintenance costs. secondly, it has natural insulation which regulates indoor temperatures for comfort. ALUMINIUM I chose to use aluminium due to its to its anti-corrosive property. It is suitable for Zambia's diverse climate. It will help improve energy efficiency because aluminium frames can be incorporated with a thermal break. "Thermal break is a component placed within the window frame to reduce heat ...

Second term reflection

This term, we had to develop a project based on three themes: primitivism, brutalism, and pop art. Initially, I selected primitivism but later switched my focus to brutalism after conducting some research. We did a brainstorming session to figure out what we wanted to create. At first, I was unsure and had a hard time coming up with ideas. However, after doing more research, I came across the clochans huts in Ireland, and my interest again shifted from brutalism to primitivism. I had to redo a lot of my research because most of them were based on the old theme. Over time, I picked a location and decided to build the multi-faith center at the same site where I use for my playground project during the first term. Once I had determined my location, theme, and vision for the project, I began developing the concept for the center. After that, I moved on to creating a 3D model and 2D designs while conducting additional research to refine my project. The start of the term was challengin...

Design board creation

This week I started the creation of my design boards for my project. To do that, I used photoshop. the first step was to choose my background picture. I went on unsplashe which a site for free images. I chose this image because it is simple and goes along with the colours on my outcomes. After that, I opened Photoshop and created a new file by clicking on " New file" and select an A3 size that I put in landscape mode.  The next step was to import the picture I downloaded from unsolash to photoshop and to do that I clicked on file > open > on your computer and chose the image. ( PICTURE) After that I imported my logo that I created on "logo for free" and positioned it in the bottom right corner of the page, then I clicked on commit > remove background to match the logo to the rest on image. ( PICTURE)  Then I clicked on the "T" on the tool bar on the left side of the screen to add the name of my project and the title of the design board. (PICTURE)...

Final 3D outcome

Here are the pictures of my 3D final outcome  The inside view

Procreate process and final digital outcome

For my digital outcome I used sketch up and procreate. After creating the building on sketchup, I used procreate to add the surrounding and some colours to the background for a better effect.  I started by dividing the page in two with the pencil tool to get a one point perspective  After that, I imported the building from sketchup to procreate by copying and pasting  Then, I refined the edges of the building to make them smooth and even. I then chose the colour blue for the the sky and green for the ground  I used the brush tool to add a little of white in the sky to make it more realistic and used the same tool to make the clouds but lowered the opacity of the colour to make the cloud match the light blue of the sky  After that, I chose a darker shade of green and used the paper daisy brush tool to make the bushes. I made the bushes by layering them from lighter tone to darker one to have a more realistic effect  And I repeated the same process for all th...

Elevations

An elevation is a precise and detailed representation of one vertical plane or face of a building or structure. It offers a flat, two-dimensional view of a particular side of a building. For my elevations, I used HB pencils to sketch then traced it over with a 0.2 ink pen  SOUTH ELEVATION NORTH ELEVATION EAST ELEVATION  WEST ELEVATION  In the next post, I will show the process I used to finalise my digital outcomes
